In this talk Dr Tom Butler presents his research on the past, present and future of the wider Smithfield area. He discusses the relationship between urban regeneration, adaptive re-use and local identity, and considers how we come to understand a local sense of place through the lives and experiences of local people. He also explores the role institutions like the Museum can play in an area’s emerging identity. Dr Tom Butler is a writer and researcher specialising in place identity, heritage, and sustainable urban development. He works as a Regenerative Places Advisor for the UK Green Building Council..
