Event description

Description

In this lecture, Prof Maria Chester examines the working methods and techniques of JMW Turner, whose works are featured in the exhibition "Turner: Northern Exposure" at the Granary Gallery. Such an examination can bring us closer to appreciating his genius and his influence on and place in the history of western art.

The focus in this lecture is on how Turner worked and was able to create his unique artistic legacy. Thanks to his beginnings as an architectural designer, his landscapes with castles and old buildings are superb from the perspective point of view. He studied Classical painters like Claude and Poussin. He attended exhibitions in London in which dioramas and panoramas were shown. He learnt about the power of optics, mechanics and paintings in those exhibitions en plein air in which the public was treated to the sound of thunder and the smell of gunpowder as in a real storm or in a real battle. He applied everything he experienced to his paintings. We are going to analyse his works with an emphasis on those made in the Scottish Borders, as well in Northumberland. We will analyse his techniques and methods, many of them created by himself. Together with “Understanding Turner: the man and his life”, this talk aims to leave the public with a informed appreciation of one of the great British artists of all times: Joseph Mallord William Turner.

This lecture forms part of a programme of art workshops, tours and lectures presented by BEA in partnership with Berwick Visual Arts; they are based around the exhibition ‘Turner: Northern Exposure’ which runs at the Granary Gallery in Berwick upon Tweed from 25th May to 13th October 2019 (Tues - Sun 11 -4. Closed Mon). Entry to the exhibition is free.

There will be two lectures by Professor Maria Chester inspired by the Turner exhibition which we hope will inform and enhance your enjoyment of the exhibition. Maria will also be leading a number of guided tours of the exhibition (maximum 15 people) including one on the day of this lecture. These cost £3 on the day, or may be booked in advance with a booking fee of 80p. To book a tour, please click here.
