An evening technical meeting on the subject of "Understanding Uncertainty in Innovation" and Prize Evening.
James Norman has received a University of Bristol Best of Bristol Lecturer award. In his lecture on Understanding Uncertainty in Innovation , he challenges us to learn, think and have fun in the process!
The environment demands that we innovate in engineering so that we can find new, low impact, solutions. However does our lack of understanding around the subject of uncertainty prevent us from innovating? Does rammed earth really need a factor of safety of 5? Is it really OK to test something once and base our design on the outcome? Does the modern engineer really understand uncertainty or do we hide behind the black box of Factors of Safety? Will this talk answer any of these questions?
