The session covers:

• Sensory development and how sensory preferences are established

• What can influence a child’s sensory likes and dislikes

• The impact of sensory preferences on everyday activities and experiences for children

• Practical advice and strategies that you can try at home with your child.

The session will be delivered online through a mix of written slides and spoken information. There are opportunities to ask questions through the online chat function during the session. Specific advice for individual children cannot be given during the session. The session is not available for staff from schools or early years settings, or any other professionals.

You do not need a referral to the Occupational Therapy Service to join the session and may find the information most helpful if you have not already accessed additional specialist support from the Occupational Therapy Service or another organisation providing specific sensory development information. We welcome members of extended families to attend, alongside parents or carers.

Details of how to join the session will be provided to those who have booked places a few days before the session date; however you will need an internet connection and internet enabled device to participate.

These sessions provide an introduction to the topic of sensory processing for parents and carers. Families are encouraged to attend these sessions if they have initial concerns about their child’s sensory development or sensory processing. Making small changes to a child’s environment or implementing a strategy to support them in an activity or situation can make a big change.
