UNESCO considers gender equality as a fundamental human right, a building block for social justice and an economic necessity. In the second annual UNESCO City of Literature lecture hosted by the University of Nottingham, award-winning novelist Elif Shafak will reflect on the individual and multi-layered experiences of women and delve into how literature plays an important role in achieving gender equality and understanding of the perspective of others.

Elif Shafak is an award-winning novelist and the most widely read female writer in Turkey. She is also a political commentator, an academic and inspirational public speaker. She writes in both Turkish and English, and has published 15 books, 10 of which are novels, including the bestselling The Bastard of Istanbul, The Forty Rules of Love and her most recent, Three Daughters of Eve. Her books have been published in 48 languages.

Audience to arrive from 5.45pm so that all are seated for the lecture to start at 6pm prompt. The lecture will be followed by a book signing session from 7pm.

The venue is 2 mins walk from the tram stop at Lakeside, behind the Archaeological Museum (building 50 on the campus map here). There is limited car parking available in the Highfield Park Visitor Parking opposite the venue. Access to the venue through the Gallery Cafe.
