The York Centre for Conflict and Security (YCCS) and the International Studies Cluster of the University of York welcome you to the talk on Truth and Justice in Times of Democratic Backsliding in Brazil, followed by the film screening Ainda Estou Aqui (I'm Still Here).

The talk explores how authoritarian legacies continue to shape politics, memory, and justice after Brazil’s 1964–1985 military dictatorship. The “afterlife” of authoritarianism, with enduring power structures and unresolved traumas, questions the real effectiveness of transitional justice in societies with lasting authoritarian legacies.

The panel will include 10-minute presentations by Professor Enea de Stutz e Almeida (University of Brasilia) and Dr Eric Hoddy (University of York – Centre for Applied Human Rights), followed by an audience discussion chaired by Evaldo Rodrigues de Araujo (University of York).

The panel will be followed by a screening of the Brazilian Oscar-winning film Ainda Estou Aqui (I Am Still Here), which explores the ongoing struggle of the Paiva family, who, like many others in Brazil, suffered under the dictatorship’s enforced disappearances. The film follows Eunice Paiva as she seeks justice for her husband, Rubens Paiva, a former Congressman abducted and killed by the military regime, while highlighting her enduring commitment to human rights and resilience.
