Event description
Bringing together two quite different stakeholder perspectives at one event, to explore how they can help each other toward Cleaner Oceans

About this event

What is in it for members of the maritime industry?

A rare insight into the emergent science in the ocean space - where you operate. Some of this science will feed the formulation of future maritime regulation and shine a light on emergent ocean economies. Forward looking maritime stakeholders will gain new insight and perspectives. These can support their ability to navigate their business forward in the ever more complex ocean environment. Are there projects which your company or segment could and should support, perhaps relatively easily? Is it possible that some ocean science projects could have a more far reaching and higher impact on problems that you are now trying to solve by using typical industry solutions. Are there insights which could turn the understanding of some of your challenges upside down?

What is in it for members of the Ocean Science community?

Shipping at sea carries over 80% of everything including raw materials and finished goods. It is an ancient and enormous industry which, although the most efficient tonne/mile available, still on the whole accounts for around 3% of global CO2 emissions. Right now the industry is trying to set about decarbonising its fuel while also slowly awakening to the critical importance of ocean health. Still, because shipping literally enables the lights to stay on and the food to appear on the supermarket shelves, it has to stay in business and cannot change over night. Learn about the drivers which the maritime industry needs to focus on and where there may be points for collaboration. The industry has an estimated 1 million people out there on the ocean at any given time. There are already apps available for seafarers to share sightings of abandoned fishing gear for example. How else can ocean data be collected? Or, does the maritime industry already possess scientifically relevant data but no one has made the connection to the scientific community?

This event will take place twice in order to improve opportunity for participation. Please choose the timing which suits you best or even attend both! Both events will have the same format.

We start with two keynote speeches. One from an important voice within the ocean science field and from and important voice within the maritime industry. These speakers will comment on the hypotheses being tested during the event, as seen from their perspective.

Participants will then be invited to participate in breakout workshops where these hypotheses are discussed and findings recorded. We will mix shipping and science participants as evenly as possible within these groups.

We will wrap up with summarising the findings and starting insight analysis.

Overall findings and insights will be fed back to participants and the wider world after both events are concluded and processed.

We propose:

Hypothesis 1 - Ocean transport and offshore activities can provide enablers for clean ocean science and research

Hypothesis 2 - The shipping sector has an untapped opportunity to support a clean ocean through strategic stakeholder nudging

Hypothesis 3 - The opposite of a clean ocean will impact shipping greatly, however these risks are not fully known. With better awareness of potential impact, investment appetite will increase.

(Other hypothesis may also be tested)

In organising these events we strive to be as inclusive as possible, in particular focusing on younger research practitioners and stakeholders across regions.

Our overarching commitment is toward clean ocean, the decade ahead and collaboration opportunities in the ocean space.

We intend to extend this conversation beyond these events and platform this important collaboration space as required into the future.

We do hope you will join us and find the experience enriching.
