Event description

Description

UCL is one of the world’s top multidisciplinary universities, with an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching.

Consistently placed in the global top 20 in a wide range of world rankings (currently we are 7th in the QS World University Rankings), UCL is home to centres of teaching excellence in subjects from medicine to languages, law to engineering, and history to astrophysics. Interdisciplinary study is encouraged and a belief that all areas of study can inform and enrich each other is woven into our programmes. We have had 29 Nobel laureates so far, with at least one every decade since the establishment of the prizes in 1901.

A central London location gives students access not only to world-renowned culture and nightlife, but also to academic resources. UCL is close to, and has teaching and research links with, countless hospitals, museums, galleries, libraries and professional bodies. International students make up nearly half our student population and come from over 150 countries, giving UCL its cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Join us for an information session discussing UCL's flagship Arts and Sciences (BASc) Programme that is leading the way in the delivery of liberal arts and science education in the UK. Launched in 2012, the degree allows students to create bespoke programmes incorporating both arts and sciences specialisms.

Students choose to major in one of four pathways: Cultures, Societies, Health and Environment or Sciences and Engineering. Students who choose to take a major in Cultures or Societies would then take a minor in Health and Environment or Sciences and Engineering – or vice versa. The educational philosophy of the BASc has many parallels with the US liberal arts model and provides students with the opportunity to study the subjects they are most interested in.

Critically however, alongside the pathways, students also study specially designed Core Courses that have been created to enhance understanding of how different branches of knowledge interrelate. These courses enable students to acquire the skills and concepts they will need to work effectively across multiple disciplines. The Core courses further encourage students to link traditional subjects in new ways, or explore the conceptual and methodological differences between arts and sciences. As part of the degree core, all students on the programme also have to study a language which can be ab initio or from a higher level.

We'd be delighted to welcome you to this evening session at British International School of Houston, where Mehvish Ashfaq, International and Affiliates Manager for Arts and Sciences, will be:

  • providing an overview of this innovative degree programme,
  • discussing UK University application procedures
  • sharing thoughts on liberal arts study in the UK and
  • showcasing UCL as a multi-disciplinary university, home to centres of teaching excellence in subjects from medicine to languages, law to engineering and history to astrophysics
