Description

At the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education we pride ourselves on our close links with the rail industry in support of our research and education programmes.

Each year, we host a programme of lectures, known as the Birmingham Railway Prestige Lecture series which are given by esteemed people from across the railway industry; from infrastructure, operations, the supply community, government agencies, supporting bodies and academics.

It would be a pleasure if you would join us.

Teas, Coffees and biscuits will be provided from 5.30pm, followed by the lecture at 6pm in Room 224, 2nd Floor, Gisbert Kapp Building, University of Birmingham.

The following is the programme of lectures for 2017. The line up for 2018 is still under development:

Tuesday 3rd October 2017

Speakers: Chris Gibbs & Piers Connor

Last summer the Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Chris Grayling, commissioned a study from a respected and experienced railway manager Chris Gibb. The objective of the study was to determine and initiate much-needed improvements to service across the Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) franchise in general and within the Southern Railway network in particular. The report was completed in December 2016 and issued to the public on 22nd June 2017.

Piers Connor, an independent railways systems consultant and visiting lecturer at the University of Birmingham will provide an assessment of the Gibb report which will be followed by informal comments by Chris Gibb on how a review of this nature is carried out and on some of the problems that are encountered in such a task.

Tuesday 7th November 2017

Speakers: David Waboso & Stuart Calvert, Network Rail

David is the Managing Director for Group Digital Railway at Network Rail. He will be talking to us about his vision for digital railway of the future.

Tuesday 21st November 2017
