Event description

Description

The University of Edinburgh Visiting Writers Series is happy to welcome author Chris McQueer, and 404 Ink publishers Laura Jones and Heather McDaid for an evening of reading and discussion.

Chris McQueer is a 20-something year old writer and sales assistant from Glasgow. After leaving school at 16, Chris found himself working under the hallowed title of 'Sandwich Artist' in Subway where he was the source of constant complaints as he couldn't cut footlong sandwiches equally in half. Now he works in a sports shop where he is regarded as the greatest seller of trainers the world has ever seen. Chris kept his writing a secret from his friends and family for several months before his girlfriend, Vanessa, encouraged him to share his work through Twitter (@ChrisMcQueer)...

...the rest is history. Chris' short story collection, Hings, was picked up by the unstoppable new Scottish press 404 Ink and has become something of a viral sensation. Just about every reviewer and media outlet to cover the book has described Chris as "the next big thing" in Scottish literature. We're immensely pleased to have him come and read his work at the Uni and answer questions from YOU, our lovely audience

*

Laura Jones and Heather McDaid are the brilliant brains behind 404 Ink: the award-winning alternative publishing house responsible for the massive runaway hit anthology Nasty Women, which has been lauded by everyone from Margaret Atwood to Nicola Sturgeon. Laura and Heather will join Chris at this event, to talk about 404 Ink, the current state of publishing, and how to (and how to NOT) get your work out into the world.

*

Golden Hare Books will be on hand to provide you with copies of Hings, Nasty Women and other 404 Ink publications and merch -- including the 404 literary magazine, currently open for submissions!

*

This event will feature a reading from Chris, a panel discussion with our three guests, and a chance for YOU to ask questions. It'll be chaired by University of Edinburgh Writer in Residence Claire Askew.

The event is FREE to attend and open to everyone.

If you have any queries, please email claire.askew@ed.ac.uk
