The conference is part of the delivery of our wider commitment to partnership and learning between the University of Gloucestershire Social Work Department and Gloucestershire Children Services and Partnership Agencies. It will be a great opportunity to meet in person and network with practitioners and students who care about anti-racist social work practice and social justice.
This is an opportunity to engage in conversations about race, racism and anti-racism to inform our practice and day-to-day lives. During the day, students and practitioners will have opportunities to network, interact and engage in workshops and listen to keynote presentations covering important issues impacting our practice, our relationships, our confidence, and our commitment to anti-racism.
Keynote speakers include:
Gurnam Singh, Associate Professor in Social Work, Coventry University – keynote title: ‘Anti-Racism in Social Work – Past and Present Contexts’
Shantelle Thomas, Course Lead, MA Social Work at the Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust and Anti Racism Lead at the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), keynote title: ‘Anti-Racism in Social work - 'A Call to Activism’
Tanya Moore & Glory Simango, Adult Social Workers, and Editors of The Anti-Racist Social Worker keynote title: - ‘Stories of Anti-Racist Social Work Activism'
During the morning and the afternoon, you will join interactive workshops which you can choose on the day when you register. These will be delivered by local practitioners, individuals with lived experiences and keynote speakers, all with expertise in their topic areas.
We want the conference to develop from conversations about race, racism and anti-racism, into a practice commitment that supports change and greater social justice.
The conference underlines our dedication as social work practitioners and students in promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion. It will aid your ability to meet Social Work England (2019) Professional Standards, BASW (2018) Professional Capabilities and the Post Qualifying Standards for Social Work (DfE, 2015).
