Event description
Ensemble of St Luke's is a popular string quartet group from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

About this Event

The Ensemble of St. Luke's was formed in 1992 when a group of friends - Alexander Marks & Elizabeth Lamberton, violins, Alex Mitchell, viola, and Gethyn Jones, cello - from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra got together informally, to raise money for St Luke’s Church in Crosby. In August 2014 they were the first chamber group to feature at the Liverpool International Music Festival.

Today's programme includes a quartet by Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996), a friend of Shostackovich whose work has enjoyed a strong recent revival of interest, and a quartet by Liverpool-based Ian Stephens who writes,

"Composing is an amazing thing. When it’s flowing, when I’m engrossed, when I utterly lose track of time – those are the best times. And the intensity of creation is closely matched by the thrill when a new piece is brought to life by musicians. But there’s one further summit – the first performance itself, when the new piece speaks directly to the audience. It’s that process of unveiling, and the reactions of the audience members to what has been unveiled, that really makes it all worthwhile.”
