University of South Wales Professional Development Meeting for Mathematics Teachers

“What is a Data Scientist?”
Data Science is a rapidly growing area of Mathematics being utilised at the forefront of Industry to improve decision making in both the Public and Private sector. Data Science is the amalgamation of many areas of Mathematics and Computing which aims to equip practitioners with the skills required to identify solutions to large scale real world problems. In this talk our industry speaker will guide us through what it means to be a ‘Data Scientist’ and how we in the education sector can enthuse the next generation to become Data Scientists and take up the numerous opportunities available to them.
Carousel of Activities:
During the course of the session you will have an opportunity to try six activities run by staff from the university. After which we will provide you with the resources needed to take the activity back to your school. The six activities are:
- Loci of the Rings – use geometry to find a safe route to Mount Doom.
- Finding the best route – how can we most efficiently use our time.
- Murder in Cluedo Mansion – use Cryptographic skills to determine who murdered Dr Black.
- Symmetries of Shapes – how can we determine the number of symmetries for a given shape?
- Mathematics and Folding Paper – what happens when you cut a Mobius strip?
- Maths Puzzles – can you solve them?
