University of Southampton Electrical & Electronic Engineering Singapore Lec...
Mon 3 April 2017, 18:45 – 21:00 SGT
We are pleased to inform you that Dr Harold Chong from our Electronics and Computer Science department will be in Singapore in April to give a public lecture along with the opportunity to meet with you to discuss any questions that you may have relating to studying at the University of Southampton.
Dr Chong’s lecture is entitled ‘The Wonder of Zinc Oxide: From Sunscreen to Transistors (Zinc Oxide Electronic Devices)’.
Zinc oxide is a non-toxic inorganic material that is widely used in everyday products such as paints, batteries, solar panels, ointments and flat screen displays. It is one of the main ingredients in sunscreen lotion, as zinc oxide can form an effective barrier against harmful UV radiation from the sun. Inspired by these absorptive and semiconducting properties of zinc oxide we, at the University of Southampton, are pioneering novel fabrication methods to produce zinc oxide nanowire structures as transistors. These can be used for bio-chemical sensing applications and high performance smart mobile devices. In this talk, Dr Chong will discuss the emergence of zinc oxide and associated electronic devices, and how we are benefiting from this wonderful material. He will also talk briefly about our how these technologies are covered in our undergraduate and postgraduqte degrees, and the unique opportunities that applicants holding a diploma from Singapore have.
Southampton is one of the best places in the world to study electronics and electrical engineering, computer science and IT degrees. Through our research-led teaching and exceptional industry connections, we prepare you for future challenges not yet imagined and jobs not yet thought of. Find out more on our YouTube channel.
We hope to meet you in Singapore!
