Event description
How can we make the most of unplanned encounters and create our own luck?

About this Event

Planned Serendipity – Serendipity is defined as “the occurrence and development of events, ideas, and inventions that result from unforeseen, random occurrences encountered by chance or luck”. So, how can we possibly plan for serendipity?

The Doctoral College and Institute of Directors student membership group at the University of Surrey are co-hosting, with the IoD Surrey, a talk and networking event on the theme of ‘planned serendipity’.

Jonathan Richards (CEO of Breathe HR)*, our keynote speaker, will talk about how planned serendipity led to the formation of Breathe HR and throughout the evening there will be a number of speakers with a wealth of experience in different business and education sectors discussing their experiences with the serendipitous, from chance encounters to be planning to be in the right place at the right time.

Jonathan was awarded Director of the Year for SMEs in the London & South region, and a finalist for the IoD Director of the Year awards 2019 in the SME category.

After a question and answer session there will be a wine reception with a selection of canapés, providing a great opportunity for you to develop contacts and build your professional network.

Where – University of Surrey, Lakeside Restaurant located within the Surrey Business School (Rik Medlik Building)

When – Wednesday November 20th (doors open at 6.30pm, tea and coffee will be available with the first speaker at 7.00pm)

The event is free to attend, however spaces are limited and booking in advance is essential

*Jonathan is CEO of Breathe, which he founded seven years ago with a plan to develop a simple and user-friendly HR software to help businesses create engaged and inspired teams. His role at Breathe is to represent the company in the business community and keep abreast of the ways leading companies manage their people. Jonathan’s vision for the company is that we should inspire the business world to put their people first and improve the way that employees are managed in SMEs, Not because it’s done particularly badly but because we believe that the best way to make businesses more productive is to make people’s lives better.

Jonathan's background is in finance and building businesses. Prior to founding breatheHR, he ran a software consultancy that implemented bespoke HR systems for larger companies. Jonathan also co-founded QuenchTec, a market research software company, and is now a non-executive director. Outside work, Jonathan can’t seem to avoid a challenge. Over the years he’s had many adventures including sailing the Atlantic and trekking in the Himalaya (twice).
