“A dash of decadence with the warmth of brain juice: meet both the ancient and modern Aristotle, whilst dissecting your neighbour’s skull”

Agora Club will transform De Marktkantine nightclub into an arena for performing collective thoughts through music, dance, design, performances and discussions. Guests will inhabit the role of Homo-Faber’s (humans that think) and they will navigate cognitive experiences, meet transspecies while exploring various neurological landscapes before joining a collective act of party and celebration.

The University of the Underground announces the first of a series of cultural events involving board members of the charity to share some of the educative methodologies taught in the basement of the University of the Underground. Titled 'Agora Club', it is an experimental performance evening exploring the act of thinking, our brains and their unconscious and the politics of social dreaming.

Join us on 27th June at the University of the Underground present the first AGORA CLUB!

The University of the Underground, which is based in nightclub DeMarktkantine’s basement, was founded in February 2017 to create global engagement with society as a whole. A registered charity, it aims to bring generations together to democratise access to public institutions and trigger changes and critical reflections through creative, experiential and design practices. It is a tuition free educative structure with an accredited Master in Design of Experiences, and a cultural institution (which hosts an unconventional research office, a sound studio, a nightclub and a public library).

As a radical new form of education, The University of the Underground produces unconventional research and design practices to better understand and challenge the formulation of culture and the manufacture and commodities of knowledge. The University of the Underground charity believes in a transnational form of education, which goes across borders and beyond nation-states.

Its two campuses are based in Amsterdam and London in the basement of two nightclubs (De Marktkantine and Village Underground) and is currently nurturing other tuition-free initiatives for the USA and beyond.

Advisory Board members include: political activist Prof. Noam Chomsky, curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, activist Nadya Andreyevna Tolokonnikova (Pussy Riot), academic Arjun Appadurai, author and McSweeneys founder Dave Eggers, MOMA curator Paola Antonelli, Ted Prize winner and SETI scientist Dr. Jill Tarter, musician Peache, Jónsi of Sigur Rós, Academy award winning director Douglas Trumbull, MET museum curator Beatrice Galilee; while guest tutors have included: Amsterdam Night Mayor Mirik Milan, Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller; DJ, radio host on BBC 6 and producer Gilles Peterson, graphic designer Paula Scher, science fiction author Bruce Sterling, experimental architect Prof. Rachel Armstrong, blogger Regine Debatty, Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan of Savages, Paula Scher and Michael Bierut amongst many others.
