About this Event

The University of Wolverhampton’s Department of Sport is pleased to offer a range of workshops enhance knowledge in a wide range of areas, the workshops will take place in our state-of-the-art facilities at Walsall Campus. The day is designed for BTEC/A-level students (ages 16+).

There are two different ways to attend this exciting day!

You can attend all day or you can attend one session of your choice (from part 1-4):

Full-day Option (9.30-10.30am Session 1, 11am-12pm Session 2, 1-1.30 lunch (not provided); 1.30-2.30pm Session 3; and 3-4pm Session 4)

Part 1 Only (9:30, 11am or 1:30) Anatomy and Physiology (1 hour)

Part 2 Only (9:30am,11am or 1:30) Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing (1 hour)

Part 3 Only (9;30, 1:30pm or 3pm) Investigating Business in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry (1 hour)

Part 4 Only (9:30, 11:00am, 1:30pm or 3pm) Skill Acquisition in Sport (1 hour)

HOW MANY PLACES CAN I RESERVE FOR MY STUDENTS?

Due to demand we are going to have to limit numbers to max 25 students per Institution.

WHAT ARE THE SESSIONS (parts)?

Part 1: Anatomy and Physiology (1 hour)The effects of exercise and sports performance on the skeletal system Using state-of-the-art 3D motion analysis in our laboratory, we will look at:

• Structure of the skeletal system Understand how the bones of the skeleton are used in sporting techniques and actions.

• Function of the skeletal system 
Understand how the functions of the skeleton and bone types are used in sporting actions and exercise.


• Injury risk Understand common injuries and injury risk for different populations.

Part 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing (1 hour)Examine training methods for profiling different components of fitness in our laboratory

• Aerobic endurance and lactate thresholdVO2 max and incremental threshold test.

• PowerThe maximum force (in kg or N) that can be generated by a muscle or muscle group.

• FlexibilityHaving an adequate range of motion in all joints of the body, the ability to move a joint fluidly through its complete range of movement.

• Body compositionThe relative ratio of fat-to-fat-free mass (vital organs, muscle, bone) in the body.

Part 3: Investigating Business in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry (1 hour) Work with experts in sport business management

• Understand how sport and active leisure business operations respond to trends and internal and external influences.

• Evaluate evidence on how a sport and active leisure business should be developed, diversified or adapted.

• Be able to make justified recommendations for a sport and active leisure business, synthesising ideas and evidence from several sources to support arguments

Part 4: Skill Acquisition in Sport (1 hour) Work with expert coaches and teachers in physical education in our indoor arena.

• Investigate the nature of skilled performance in a range of sports and physical activities. • Explore theories of teaching and learning from experts in the field of pedagogy.

• Carry out teaching and learning strategies for sports skill development with our coaching team.
