Growing success through the University's thematic areas

Our Research and Innovation conference will celebrate the success of our academic community in research and innovation. The Conference will champion interdiscliplinary research and innovation under the aegis of the University's five thematic areas. The event will provide an opportunity for you to meet with your colleagues, to learn about new work, and to build new networks for the future. We hope that you will join us in this festival of intellectual inquiry, creativity and impact at the University.

Outline of conference programme:

9:00-9:30 - Arrival

9:30-9:45 - Welcome

9:45-10:30 - Lauren Bowker

Material Alchemist, will be discussing working across boundaries. She is the founder of T H E U N S E E N, an innovative Research and Development company that works across many disciplines to combine science and art.

10:30-11:00 - Break

11:00-12:30 - Collaborations, Impact and Engagement - talks by University of Portsmouth Academic staff

  • Prof John Mcgeehan - Engineering enzymes that can digest plastic - International research for the Circular Plastics Economy

16:00-16:45 - Professor Jim Al-Khalili - The Importance of Public Engagement

A theoretical physicist at the University of Surrey where he holds a joint chair in physics and public engagement in science. He received his PhD in nuclear reaction theory in 1989 and has published over 100 papers in the field. His current interest is in the application of quantum mechanics in biology and, together with colleagues has set up the world’s first doctoral training centre in quantum biology at Surrey. Jim is a prominent author and broadcaster. He has written 14 books, is a regular presenter of TV science documentaries and for the past seven years he has hosted the award-winning weekly BBC Radio 4 programme, The Life Scientific.
