Event description

Description

Norwegian psychologist, facilitator and developer of the Diversity Icebreaker Bjørn Z Ekelund is visiting Scotland in February and we are excited to welcome him to Edinburgh for this one-off free evening event.

Diversity Icebreaker® is a concept that has been used by more than 300 000 people in over 75 countries. However, it is relatively new in the Scottish and UK contexts. The Icebreaker is an experiential learning module of 60 – 90 minutes that can be used in seminars, both as a starting point and also as an OD intervention in its own right. It creates positivity, trust, creativity and a learning mode of curiosity and dialogue - a great way to get workshops, conversations and team development to start in a useful way. It also co-creates a language of cognitive diversity relevant for interpersonal interaction and problem solving, helping participants to see what's useful and valuable in their colleagues. .

Bjørn Z. Ekelund (psychologist, University of Oslo, Norway/ MBA Henley Management College) is the founder of the concept and has been central in its development beginning in Norway in 1995. The company behind Diversity Icebreaker® is Human Factors AS, a company he established in 1993 in cooperation with Adrian Atkinson, at that time founder of Human Factors UK in Stratford-upon-Avon. The concept was finally presented fully internationally in the 2019 book “Unleashing the Power of Diversity: How to Open Minds for Good” (Routledge).

In the seminar Bjørn will demonstrate Diversity Icebreaker® and make it relevant for consultants/HR/leaders in just 90 minutes. There is no mandatory certification to apply the Diversity Icebreaker ® for trainers and facilitators - the resources required can be purchased online in the numbers required. Participants in this event will be able to use the personal assessment free during the month following this workshop. Facilitators wishing to use the concept for a seminar or intervention will get initial access to the online version access for free once.

This event is promoted by Dr Mark McKergow and the Centre for Solutions Focus at Work, based in Edinburgh. Mark is the author of five books on change and leadershop, including The Solutions Focus (now in 11 languages) and Host: Six new roles of engagement for teams, organisations, communities and movements. Mark has been an organisational consultant, facilitator and coach for some three decades and is always interested in ways of working which produce results both effectively (they work!) and efficiently (they value people's time). Mark met Bjørn in his work on the Host Leadership Field Book (Solutions Books, 2019), to which Bjørn contributed a chapter about working with refugee families in Norway.

The event will be held at the Melting Pot, 5 Rose Street, Edinburgh EH2 2PR. We will start at 7pm (coffee available from 6.30pm) and finish at 8.30pm. There will be a chance to continue the conversation with Bjørn over a drink afterwards. Tickets are free.

This event is a (slightly late) part of the Firestarter Festival, designed to celebrate the various creative, innovative, even dangerous ways in which we are all contributing to the transformation of our Public Services in Scotland and beyond.
