To get the most from your camera it is essential that you understand camera basics like how to expose an image. Whether it is photography or video, a good understanding of the fundamentals that are taught on this course will allow you to unleash your creativity.

In this one-day class with Tom Webb you will learn the basic theory in the morning, and do some practical exercises in the afternoon.

Bring your own camera and learn how to push it to the limit.

Morning session: Know your camera

  • What constitutes a camera
  • Explaining the key components of exposure
  • Aperture
  • Shutter speed
  • ISO
  • The exposure triangle
  • How to prioritise and find your optimal settings
  • Frame rates for video
  • White balance
  • Basic composition

Afternoon session: Use your camera

The afternoon session will be a walk around the local area giving the students a chance to try out different photography and video techniques they have learnt. If the weather is bad we will do this in the studio.

Students will need to bring their own camera.

Who should attend

Anyone who wants to get a better understanding of using their DSLR or Mirrorless camera. The course will cover the fundamental camera basics of creating an exposure that apply to all photography and video. This knowledge is where it all starts and applies to every camera.

About your instructor

Tom Webb started making short films in his early teens and his love of filmmaking continued in his career. After starting his filmmaking life re-editing American TV shows for broadcast on the Discovery Channel in the UK and filming Martial Arts and Professional Wrestling.

Tom then went on to be Head of Creative at Upbeat, a digital agency that covers video production and web development. Whilst there Tom filmed and edited everything from press junkets to film premieres, medical videos to corporate events, A-list movie stars to random people in the street. Alongside this Tom has also co hosted the Have You Seen..? Podcast,

Tom has made award winning short films, short form documentaries and a feature length documentary about the male perspective of fertility treatment The Easy Bit which premiered at Raindance in 2019. It was reviewed in The Hollywood Reporter.
