The Music, Heritage, Place project is uncovering the musical heritage of 1550-1850 held in county record offices across England. The project is cataloguing these musical sources and developing a decentralised understanding of English music, challenging the dominant histories of English music that previously focused the major cities and cultural centres of London, Oxford and Cambridge. Dr Steph Carter has been leading the cataloguing and researching of musical sources found in England’s four most northern counties. Dr Carter will summarise her discoveries at Northumberland Archives and how they contribute to revealing previously untold stories about the men and women active in musical life during past centuries.
