Event description
Unlocking the Power of the Human - a deconstructed conference exploring Inclusion and Diversity with Floella Benjamin via ZOOM

About this event

Our Unlocking the Power of the Human conference is back by popular demand, but this time, given the circumstances we find ourselves in and recognising the additional pulls on our time many of us are facing, we have chosen to deconstruct the conference!

What does that mean? Well, rather than one day, the conference sessions will be virtual, and spread out across the year. We will still be providing interactive sessions with GREAT speakers to provide you with a chance to learn about and unpick all the components of diversity that our members have told us they need to understand better (ethnicity, disability, systemic bias, gender identity, sexual orientation, neurodivergence, masculinity, benevolent sexism, and others) and all our speakers will be providing you with really tangible steps to be inclusive.

As a non-profit making organisation, our tickets are priced to just cover costs. We offer tickets for state and independent schools and the cost of a ticket provides access to the session for your entire staff body.

Our next session Through the square window: A dream of belonging

Floella Benjamin, for many of us, is a legend and role model that shaped our understanding of the world! Yet, her journey to being accepted, visible and valued was not a smooth one at all.

Coming from the Caribbean as a child on the Windrush boats, Floella came to Britain in 1960 and experienced a huge culture shock; expecting everyone to treat her kindly and with respect, but instead finding a Britain that was cold, unwelcoming, violent and bleak. She had to learn to live within two cultures fast if she was going to survive.

In this deconstructed session, Floella will tell us her experiences, how she came to be the first Black woman on children’s TV and how she influenced the sector to understand the importance of representation.

She will recount how she has used her experiences of rejection, othering and exclusion to engage others on the importance of inclusion, be an ally and a role model, and to use her platform to drive change. Her work around the Windrush scandal, in the House of Lords and in Media has been inspirational.

Her story has many takeaways for the lived experience of our students today and how we can take their dream of belonging and make it a reality for them. We are pretty sure there will also be some reminders of just why we loved Floella on Playschool too!
