What is this event about?

WriteClub's online open mic parties started back in 2020 in response to You Know What. They've become popular events where writers come and share their words. You can expect an evening packed with poems and stories, plus a chance to share your own work. Come and read, listen and celebrate new writing - no matter what else is happening in this craaaaaaazy world.

Who is this party for?

Everyone is welcome in the WriteClub Zoom Room. This party is open to WriteClubbers and wannabe WriterClubbers and non-WriteClubbers and people who've never even heard of WriteClub until now. Basically anyone who loves hearing new words.

How is this party going to work?

We'll meet on Zoom - I'll send login details closer to the time. We'll have a selection of readers in the main Zoom room - if you'd love to be one of those, then please email in advance to You can read work that you've produced yourself, or you can bring a piece by someone else that has inspired you. Or you can just come along and spend time in excellent company!

Who's bringing the cocktails?

You are! And the party hats! And the sequins. (Or the mugs of tea and pyjamas...whatever you feel like's your house!)

Do I have to read to take part?

Not at all! You can come and be part of the brilliant audience who will listen and show appreciation of the creative work with cheers and thumbs up and applause.

I'd love to read! How can I do that?

Share an extract from your work in progress, read a poem that you love, unleash a rant, a story, a snippet from your diary. It can be writing wot-you-made-yourself, or writing from someone else that might inspire us all. If you want to be on the list of readers, you'll need to get in quick and book your space - email

I've never been to a WriteClub session. Can I still join in?

Yes, but priority for the main reading slots will be given to people who have attended at least one WriteClub workshop in the past.

This is not a creative writing workshop, it's a chance to get together and enjoy the company of other writers. It's an opportunity to listen to some great writing and to share your own if you want to (book your slot in advance, please!)

Writing workshops, retreats and one-to-one mentoring

Join WriteClub for inspiring creative writing workshops, connect with an awesome writing community, and sign up for one-to-one support to help you get the most from your writing.

All writers welcome.

Is it an actual club? Like, do I get a badge? Not really. Though there is a community of WriteClubbers who regularly come to workshops both online and in real life. WriteClub offers workshops to help you get words down on the page, to help you deal with procrastination and to get feedback on your work.

What if I haven't written anything before? Well, that's probably not true - we've all written stuff at some point. Basically we're here to create a space for you to get words out. It doesn't matter where you are with your writing. Perhaps you're half way through a second novel. Perhaps you haven't written more than a shopping list in years. Wherever you're at, we'll have a session to suit you.

I really want to work one-to-one rather than in a group. Can I do that? Sure. Pop us an email at and we'll arrange a time to chat about our mentoring packages.

Who leads the sessions? Workshops are mostly led by WriteClubber-in-chief, Alison Powell. She's been running writing workshops forever (seriously, she even used to get her primary school friends writing stories...) and established WriteClub in 2016. She supports new and established writers and runs regular workshops on all aspects of the writing craft. She is an award winning writer, published in various anthologies and magazines and holds an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa.

She has years of experience as a secondary English & Drama teacher and is also a fully fledged INLPTA certified Master Practitioner of NLP and coaching. She is an active member of NAWE and a channel partner with Paper Nations.

She believes that everyone has the right to express themselves in writing and runs all her sessions with a positive approach and a genuine passion for helping people set their words free. Her love of poetry and story, along with her enthusiasm for helping people find the best in themselves are reflected in her lively, welcoming and open presentation style. She promises to do her very best to ensure you find the support you need to make your writing feel wonderful.
