Event description
An ‘unplugged’ introduction to how we can explore and understand data about ourselves and our communities without using a computer

About this Event

This course is designed for individuals in both primary and secondary sectors to learn about how data is stored and used in our communities, and discover practical activities to teach learners about data gathering and presenting information.

The focus will be on learning how to teach data education through a set of ‘unplugged’ lessons that can be introduced into the school as a STEM/STEAM or interdisciplinary project. Computing Science and Numeracy outcomes will be covered by gathering data, analysing information to identify trends and creating data visualisations.

This course is particularly suitable for Primary and Secondary staff who want to include data education and computing science concepts and strategies within another subject area such as Maths, Art, PSE and Social Subjects as well as non-CS subject Secondary specialists who are new to teaching Computing Science.

This interdisciplinary course will give you an opportunity to explore with colleagues the challenges of introducing and expanding data education and computing science experiences for learners in your school.

By the end of this course, you will:

- be familiar with a set of ‘unplugged’ lessons for teaching Information Handling and Computing Science concepts across the curriculum

- consider ways of leading, motivating and developing the staff in your school so that data education, information handling and computing science concepts can be introduced across your school

- gain an understanding of the emerging field of Data Science and the importance it has to our society and the benefits to our learners

- learn about strategies and take away materials that will be of practical value to you as a teacher/principal teacher/faculty leader.

Throughout the session, there will be opportunities to network with fellow participants, and for discussion including sharing practice, challenges and opportunities for change in schools.
