Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

GuruShots and SmugMug recently teamed up to host a global photography contest with the theme of 'unposed' photography. It was a huge success.

Reflections in windows, a deep talk between two friends, a young couple having a giggle fit, or a significant scene that tells the world: “We’re not OK”. What are the moments that pass you by? When you’re surrounded by the familiarity of your local town or city, it’s easy to pass through the streets without noticing the scenes unravelling beside you. Sometimes these little moments of significance are worth recording - for history, for the story, or for finding beauty in the mundane.

SmugMug teamed up with GuruShots and explored a unique project that encouraged people from all around the world to pick up their cameras and seek out the ‘unposed’ moments that often pass them by. This took shape in the form of a photography contest where photographers had the option to enter into the exhibition challenge. Winners will have their photographs showcased at an exhibition in Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, during the world’s largest arts festival - The Fringe Festival . We were overwhelmed by how many thought-provoking photographs were submitted, which resulted in 16.3 million votes!

The exhibition will take place in Whitespace Gallery , Edinburgh from 11am - 6pm August 31st - September 4th 2017. There will be an opening vernissage* on August 30th from 7pm-10pm, where invitees will get the opportunity to preview the photographs and listen to a talk by one of Scotland’s favourite candid street photographers and SmugMug customer - Ami Strachan. The exhibition will showcase the top 400 photographs; 40 will be printed by Loxley Colour and hung in the gallery, and the remaining 360 photographs will be displayed digitally throughout the exhibition.

Of course, it’s geographically difficult to give every photographer their printed photograph after the exhibition so they have kindly agreed to donate their photographs to a local Edinburgh charity. Photographs will be donated to Big Hearts Foundation , who partner with local charities in Edinburgh to provide a meaningful difference to families and individuals that need their help the most.

We are so excited to reveal some of the winners from this amazing contest, which helped to motivate photographers from across the globe to engage in this particular theme of unposed moments.

Note for PR/bloggers: there will be an invite only opening night/drinks reception on 30th, with guest speakers and a preview to the event - please contact Lauren if you would like to come along: lauren@smugmug.com
