Event description

Description

Screening of Unseen Holocaust (Formative TV and Skyvision 2014), a unique film that shows rare footage of the Holocaust filmed by Soviet camera crews during World War Two. This enables audiences to get a deeper understanding of a neglected part of the Holocaust: the Nazis' mass shootings of Russian, Ukrainian, and other Jews of the former Soviet Union in 1941 and 1942, that preceded the gas chambers and the death camps.

Screening Followed by Panel Discussion

Chair Jeremy Hicks, Professor of Russian Culture and Film QMUL, author of First Films of the Holocaust, consultant on Unseen Holocaust

Ilya Altman (Russian historian, Professor of Russian State University of the Humanities, Moscow and founder and co-chairman of the Russian Research and Educational Holocaust Center, Moscow).

Stuart Liebman (Professor EmeritusDepartment of Media Studies, Queens College
and Ph.D. Programs in Art History and Theatre,CUNY Graduate Center, expert on film and the Holocaust)

Claire le Foll (Associate Professor of East European Jewish History and Culture, University of Southampton, Parkes Institute for the study of Jewish/non-Jewish relations)

The discussion will be filmed and may be quoted for research purposes: anyone not consenting to be filmed is requested to sit towards the back of the auditorium.

Following the screening and panel discussion, there will be a drinks reception and an opportunity to see Ilya Altman’s exhibition: 'The Holocaust: Annihilation, Liberation, Rescue.'
