Highly-acclaimed play comes to City Lit John Lyons Theatre

Unspoken, performed by Leeds Arts Centre and written by Yorkshire writer Neil Rathmell with retired consultant speech and language therapist Dr Trudy Stewart, is an original stage play about stammering. The main character, Alex, is a young man who has been hiding his stammer all his life. In the opening scene he is preparing to go out – his plan is to propose to his girlfriend during the course of the evening. However, that event appears secondary as Alex is grappling with a bigger issue. He must decide whether to tell her the secret of his stammer or choose once again to let it remain unspoken.

Performed by actors from the Leeds Arts Centre, the play addresses five powerful themes: difference; vulnerability; choice; compromise; the burden of experience or memory.

A valid, authentic drama, Unspoken accurately reflects the real life experience of individuals who stammer. You will gain a deeper understanding of what it is like to have a stammer - of the anxiety, panic, and fear of ridicule felt every time a person who stammers speaks, and the life compromises that they make from an early age.

There are two performances on Saturday 24 March:

Matinee: 3 pm

Ticket prices: £12 (adults); £6 (young people, aged 13-16)*

Evening: 7.30 pm

Ticket prices: £15 (includes glass of wine/soft drink)

After the evening performance there will be an after show discussion involving one of the writers, Trudy Stewart and the actors.

Performance time: 1 hour and 20 minutes (with no interval)

*Unspoken is appropriate for teenagers aged 13 and upwards, accompanied by an adult. Please be advised that the play addresses adult themes and contains some swearing.
