Event description
A panel discussion of the different regulatory approaches in Europe to women’s dress, in particular the veil in its different forms.

About this Event

The aim of the presentation is to bring to the attention of the British public the experience of Greece, which has no legislative prescriptions on the matter, and the consequences of this fact on the choices which women, particularly refugee women, make in the country.

One aspect which will be explored in particular is the memory in Greece of the headscarf in its different forms as a part of traditional dress and whether this affects public attitudes today and whether it makes the Greek example inapplicable to societies with different traditions. The panel discussion will be followed by questions from the audience.

The panellists will include Chryssoula Kapartziani, a lawyer with research interests in the Sociology of Law, Spyros Koulocheris who is the Head of Legal Affairs at the Greek Council for Refugees and Myrsini Pichou, a specialist in the history of women’s dress.

A Q&A Session will follow.

Booking essential. Free entry - optional donation appreciated.
