Unveiling Vazha Pshavela: Stories and Artworks Inspired by the Poet

#AsiaHouseArts

FREE FOR STUDENTS!

We are delighted to present talks, poetry readings and Georgian polyphonic singing with the Maspindzeli Choir inspried by the 19th-20th century renown Georgian poet Vazha Pshavela. The event will to coincide with the launch of "Unveiling Vazha Pshavela" the most comprehensive book to date of his poems in English.

The poems in the book have been selected to illustrate Vazha’s powerful, tragic, often Shakespearean force, as well as the development of the poet’s ideas and approach to nature, very relevant to ecological politics in the world today. The poems have been translated by Donald Rayfield OBE. The book also includes specially commissioned works by the contemporary Georgian writer Ana Kordzaia-Samadashvili, Georgian fashion designer Manana Antelidze, and the artists Leonid Semeiko and Andro Semeiko, which gives a many-sided vision of the poet’s work.

Donald Rayfield will give a talk about the poet’s work followed by a panel discussion with the initiator and editor of the book artist Andro Semeiko.

We are thrilled to be joined by Golden Globe and BAFTA winning renowned Welsh actress Dame Siân Phillips who will be reading selected poems from Unveiling Vazha Pshavela on the night.

A number of original artworks published in the book will be on display during the evening.

The event will be opened by the Ambassador of Georgia to the UK, HE Tamar Beruchashvili.

Complimentary Georgian Wine and Canapés will be served during the event generously supported by the Embassy of Georgia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and British Georgian Society.

Publication of the book was made possible by the generous support from Georgian National Book Center and Arts Council England.

The book will also be available to purchase during the event.
