This virtual urban design summer school will help you understand neighbourhoods and develop the skills and knowledge needed to support, create and plan for their success.

The school is open to anyone with an interest in urban design and will be of particular benefit to local authority officers and members in planning, housing, highways and regeneration teams from across the country, other public sector bodies and Government departments.

FAQ's

Will the 3 days be conducted purely online?

This is a virtual Summer School, so all the talks, discussions and mentoring will be on line – but each day will also include a task for delegates to do within their own home or neighbourhood.

Are there any particular software packages I need to ensure I have downloaded?

You will need access to Zoom and we would recommend downloading the app rather than using the web version. If this is not possible on your work laptop then you could use a personal device instead. You will also need a webcam (most laptops have in-built cameras), microphone or headset and Microsoft Office package (we will predominantly be using Powerpoint).

Will the events be recorded?

The events will be recorded and only made available to those booked to attend the Summer School. Some talks will be pre-recorded so delegates can watch in their own time before the school if they wish – allowing for less screen time during the 3 school days.

Is the Summer School aimed at students or practitioner's?

The Summer School is aimed at practitioner’s but please do let us know if you are a student and interested in the Summer School. We can let you know if we open it up to students.

I can only join for one/two days of the Summer School, can I purchase a reduced ticket?

We are encouraging participants to join for the full 3 days as each day interlinks to understand the connections between good urban design and good streets and homes. However, we may release a limited number of day tickets closer to the event, so please do email us to express your interest in which day you would like to attend and we will place you on a wait list.

I do not have access to a credit or debit card, can I pay via invoice?

It is possible to pay via invoice but you will still need to register your details on Eventbrite. Please contact us for further information at info@urbandesignlondon.com

What will the assignment be?

The assignment will involve you investigating part of your neighbourhood, either the areas within a 10-minute walk of your home or your local high street. Using the Ladder of Place Quality, you will assess if the area is fit for purpose, how easy it is to walk around and how well buildings fit together . you will also be asked to think about how the area could be improved.

How will I be allocated a mentor?

Once you register for a ticket you will be asked a series of questions to help pair you with your mentor. Mentors will be allocated according to your needs, experience and expertise; we aim to allocate mentors regionally so there is an understanding and knowledge of the wider infrastructure provision and requirements in your area.

What’s the difference between introduction and practical sessions?

The introductory lectures will cover design concepts, principles and objectives establishing what makes a good neighbourhood. The practical lectures will provide tips on how to carry out or consider certain aspects of good neighbourhoods such as design and inclusion, understanding drawings & graphics or modern methods of construction and materials.
