Urban Segregation and Inequality in Europe and China Conference

31s July 2017

Rapid growth in internal and international migration over the past decades, and the associated rise of nationalism have led to increasing concerns about segregation, whether it is rising or falling and whether segregation is necessarily a bad thing.

At the same time there are growing concerns about rising inequality. Inequalities in income, health and other aspects of wellbeing across different ethnic and social groups, also raise questions about the links with segregation. To what extent do inequality and segregation reinforce one another, particularly given the tendency for housing markets to sort residents according to their ability to afford the best locations?

This international and interdisciplinary conference aims to offer a forum for researchers, policy makers and practitioners to discuss and debate about the nature, causes and consequences of segregation and inequality in European and Chinese contexts and consider solutions to tackling them. It is sponsored by the ESRC-CASS project entitled ‘Urban Development, Migration, Segregation and Inequality’.

The conference is followed by a 4-day summer school on Applied Statistical Methods for Analysing Segregation & Inequality, to which you are warmly invited. For further details please go to https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/smi/conferences-and-events/esrc-summer-school-analysing-segregation-inequality.
