About this event

The Journey of Looking

Join the international urban sketching instructor Ian Fennelly for a pen and watercolour workshop at the Watergate Street Gallery's historical Cavern, outside on The Cobbles and into the City.

The 3 hour workshop will take you on a creative journey of really looking at the subject; in this case the city's famous Eastgate Clock.

The 3 hour workshop is divided into 5 stages - establishing the outline of the composition, developing tone and depth, introducing colour and energy and then adding those important details such as the small patterns and textures that make it so personal and rewarding.

Ian will demonstrate each stage in a relaxed and friendly manner and will offer as much support and help as necessary.

This workshop will teach you a process of looking which can be adapted to all of the work that you do afterwards. It develops knowledge and understanding of how cityscapes are composed through pen and watercolour.

Images to work from will be provided, but artists will need to supply their own drawing and painting materials - details of which are provided below.

The Creative Journey:

Outline

Focus on big shapes and talk about composition. Discuss the relationship between those first shapes and lines, and the edge of the page.

Inside the shapes

This adds realism and structure (and it tidies up the mess!)

Watercolour

Discuss colour choice - local colour, emotional colour, technique and choice of brushes. Also what we don’t paint is sooo important!

Brush Pens

To add tone and depth to the composition, and also to calm down the colours.

Detail part 1

Looking for patterns and textures. Drawing inside the shapes and on top of the watercolour.

Detail part 2

Noticing and recording the little stuff.

Evaluate session and share experiences

Give feedback, take photos, review what we have learnt

This creative journey, like any process, can be adapted, so we may return to painting at the end. We may also have a break in between. What’s important is we learn and have fun in an exciting and visually dynamic environment.
