Aim and Outcomes:
Aim: to ensure staff have the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively insert a male and female urethral catheter.

On completion the delegate should be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the male and female urinary system
  • Explain the indications for urethral catheterisation
  • Select correct equipment to perform the procedure, including suitable selection of catheter and bags
  • Demonstrate safe and effective insertion of a urethral catheter and correctly document this
  • Identify common complications and appropriate prevention and/or management of these
  • Demonstrate how to care for a patient with a catheter in situ, how to remove a catheter and take a catheter specimen of urine
  • Explain own role in providing information for patients/carers in promoting self-care
