About this event

Family & Education • Children & Youth

Bereaved children and young people DO grieve, and they do so as intensely and as fully as bereaved adults; BUT, in age-related ways that differ from the adults. Because of their young age, they are emotionally immature and often struggle with both understanding their grief and express their feelings.

For those supporting bereaved children, the overall aim is to help them find the most appropriate medium (the "Metaphor for Grief") through which they can start to understand and address their grief. Much of this support work is through Non-Directive Play Therapy - and Bibliotherapy is one such approach.

This is an enjoyable, informative and creative workshop that takes a comprehensive look at how fictional books (with the themes of death, dying, grief, and loss central to the story) can help bereaved children and young people make sense of the loss of a close loved one.

We'll look at and assess a wide range of current books that are available for Bibliotherapy. In addition, we'll explore the aims and ethos of Bibliotherapy, how children and young people read, how to assess a book for its suitability for Bibliotherapy, the many ways Bibliotherapy can be used ... and how to become a Bibliotherapist!
