Using Creative Research Methods with Children and Young People
UKSBM Children's Health Special Interest Group
Understanding child and adolescent health and wellbeing requires creative and participatory approaches that centre young people’s voices. This event will showcase how innovative qualitative and arts-based methods can be used to explore adolescent health and wellbeing in meaningful ways.
Craig Houston will draw on his doctoral research with care-experienced children and young people in Scotland, exploring how places shape belonging and social connectivity. Using co-production, photovoice, and walking interviews, his work demonstrates how participatory methods empower young people to share experiences in ways that traditional research practices often miss.
Ella Sangmyr will discuss her interdisciplinary doctoral research on health, body image, and peer cultures among adolescent girls in the UK and Sweden. Working with schools and charities, her research co-produces educational resources with a socio-critical, arts-based lens, underpinned by feminist and poststructuralist theories.
Together, the speakers will highlight opportunities and challenges in using creative and participatory methods to deepen understanding and foster impact in child and adolescent research.
