Event description
Using ‘Drama for Learning’ techniques with Picture Books at KS1 and KS2 - led by Primary Drama Expert, Patrice Baldwin

About this Event

There are many high-quality picture books that contain deep, meaningful learning possibilities. However, the text and pictures are often not being actively and interactively explored separately and together. Drama strategies can be used to help children to enter picture books together and make important links between the language and images, the characters and situations, the themes and their own lives. This course will show how this can be approached, using The Tunnel by Anthony Brown and The Arrival by Shaun Tan.

PARTICIPANTS WILL

• Learn about some drama strategies that can be used with picture books

• Get suggestions about what to consider, when selecting a picture book to approach through Drama;

• Be talked through an upper KS1 picture book and listen to the thinking behind the choice of strategies for the intended learning:

• Be talked through an upper KS2 picture book and listen to the thinking behind the choice of strategies for the intended learning:

• Receive high-quality picture book recommendations, for exploration through Drama and share and receive other suggestions through ‘chat’;

Most of Patrice Baldwin’s books contain some drama lessons that explore picture books. Teachers attending this course will receive the lesson plans that relate to the two picture books that are used during this online session.

Patrice will share her ideas, drama strategies booklet, resources and lesson plans and answer participants’ questions.

This course is also available for schools to host online during 2020-21

‘Patrice Baldwin is a rarity. She is one of the few primary drama experts left in this country and quite possibly the most experienced and effective drama primary teacher. Teachers on her courses, come away feeling more confident and with a broader repertoire. Her work is excellent!’ Pie Corbett

Absolutely brilliant! Patrice’s course opened doors for colleagues which they would not have believed possible. In everything she does, she walks delegates through the materials, and discusses the impact this has on children’s learning. She uses drama conventions to create opportunities for pupils to secure their learning in new and deeper ways. Mary Myatt
