Using Mathematical Games
Overview
Join Lynwen for a practical professional learning session exploring how mathematical games can support reasoning, number sense and meaningful learning in the primary classroom.
🧠🎲 Session Overview
Mathematical games can be a powerful and engaging way to support children’s understanding, confidence and enjoyment of maths.
This session explores how mathematical games can be used to practise and deepen understanding of key mathematical concepts, develop reasoning skills, and strengthen mathematical language. We will consider why games are so effective, how they motivate learners, and how they can be used purposefully to support meaningful learning.
🎯 Games are highly motivating – children choose to participate freely and enjoy playing, creating natural opportunities for:
- repetition
- consolidation
- discussion
The session will focus on simple, quick-to-learn games that can be easily adapted for use across a range of year groups and classroom contexts.
🔢✨ What will be covered?
We will explore a variety of mathematical games that can be used to:
✔ Practise number facts
✔ Provoke rich mathematical discussion
✔ Reinforce key mathematical vocabulary
✔ Develop number sense
✔ Promote mathematical reasoning
Practical ideas will be shared that can be taken straight back into the classroom.
👩🏫👨🏫 Who is this session for?
This session is aimed at primary practitioners, including:
- Teachers
- Support staff
- Early Years, KS1 and KS2 practitioners
Lynwen Barnsley has many years’ experience of providing mathematics training and support for primary schools. Before beginning work as an independent consultant, she was Maths Adviser with the City and County of Swansea. She now provides bespoke mathematics training for schools, training courses with Collective Learning and works as a consultant for Numicon.
Lynwen’s training courses focus on the why and how of teaching mathematics, providing practical ideas and approaches that ensure learners “make sense” of maths and develop as independent mathematical thinkers.
🎥 This session will be recorded and available to view for 7 days after the event.
Please note: You must register to receive the recording — even if you can’t attend live.
