Description

Using twitter for #research!

Presented by : Dr James Steele, Associate Professor - Sport and Exercise Science

With the next REF already in everyone’s minds it would seem that something as simple as starting up a twitter account could have a meaningful effect upon our future submission. Recent research suggests tweeting articles increases the likelihood of them being cited (as opposed to articles likely to be cited getting tweeted) and this could have an effect on the quality rating afforded to our outputs over this cycle. In addition, even if it doesn’t affect citations, having your papers widely discussed across social media is, as the authors of this piece suggest, an indicator of how much of a social impact your work might be having. This ties in with the growing open access movement whereby we want as many people as possible, not just other academics, reading and benefitting from the research we do. Online article level metrics can be worked into impact case studies to help support them.

Though by no means an expert, I’ve personally used twitter to much success as a researcher. Therefore this session is aimed at highlighting this experience, offering ways for researchers to utilise twitter, and opening discussion regarding the possible benefits of doing so.

Main objectives :

  • To learn what twitter is and how it works
  • Understand why to use twitter
  • Consider examples of where using twitter has created research success.
