Utopian Architecture: Brutalism

Taught by Lucy McGeown

Explore some of the most ambitious, idealistic and innovative architects and artists who dared to imagine better, bolder and brighter worlds through brutalist architecture.

Love it or loathe it, brutalist architecture had bold visions for how people could work, live, study and play have captured the imaginations of photographers and artists for decades. These big dreamers envisioned spaces that would enhance our daily lives, mobilise a better society, incorporate nature and create stylish, functional futures for all...albeit with varying degrees of success!

“Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in

the light.” - Le Corbusier

In this class we’ll look at the buildings that exemplify brutalist architecture, how they successfully or unsuccessfully served their communities and how design itself contributed to their success or failure. We’ll draw these unusual buildings, using frottage and other techniques to mimic Brutalism’s style of leaving raw materials and rough surfaces visible.

Born in response to both the need to rebuild and rethink society in the aftermath of World War II, Brutalism is named after the raw concrete or ‘béton brut’ often used in its architecture. Starting with the pioneer of Brutalism, Le Corbusier, and his Unit d’Habitation in Marseille, we’ll look at how this founding work of modern architecture aimed to strike a balance between the individual and the collective. Le Corbusier’s seminal text of 1927, Towards an Architecture, set out his approach to form and function and introduced ideas applied in this building around design at a human scale.

We’ll then go on to look at urban housing complex Habitat 67 in Montreal as well as the National Theatre, the Barbican, Alexandra Estate and Trellick tower in the UK. Along with examples from Tunisia and Zambia, we’ll consider the idyllic visions for these buildings as well as their physical construction and commanding visual presence in their landscapes.
