Description

Creating hay meadows by Dr Lynn Besenyei

Our hay meadows are comprised of a wide variety of plant species and an equally diverse array of animal species. Interestingly each one is a slightly different mix of species from the next. Sadly, most examples of this iconic habitat have been lost since 1945 and it is now important to preserve the remaining ones for future generations.

It is possible to create new meadows simply by using green hay from an existing one. This talk describes the research undertaken at UW into the methods used to achieve replicas of existing meadows. It also investigates how these methods can be improved and examines factors affecting success. Site choice, soil, timing of creation, ripeness of the seeds and future management are all important.

The talk will be given by Dr Lynn Besenyei, an ecologist and senior lecturer in the Faculty of Science & Engineering, who undertakes research into meadow creation. Lynn is looking to learn more about this habitat by attempting to create replicas and managing them traditionally as they have been over millennia. She would love to see this habitat preserved for posterity, especially in Staffordshire.
