Event description

Prove your UX knowledge, get CPUX certified!

The NYC UXPA in association with the international UXQB and UX guru Rolf Molich present a Professional 3-day User Experience (UX) certification program covering user experience terms and methods – delivered by Rolf Molich and independently assessed/certified by iSQI.

18-20 December 2018 in New York City, hosted at Goldman Sachs

What is CPUX?

CPUX (Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience) is an international standard for qualification of individuals who are professionally involved in developing or ensuring the usability or user experience of products.

Read more about CPUX on the website of the User Experience Qualification Board,

Is UX certification relevant to me?

Absolutely! “If the USERS can’t use it, it doesn’t work” – so knowledge about usability and user experience is essential for anyone who cares for their users.

Foundation level certification is appropriate for anyone who works in user experience (UX) or who wants to become familiar with the basics of UX, for example product managers, business analysts, software developers and designers of all interactive systems that have a user interface.

Why is this course relevant for me?

  • If you are a developer, business analyst or manager who is interested in UX or works with UX Professionals: To acquire basic knowledge and skills that follow established conventions so you can communicate with your UX professionals and know what to expect from them
  • If you are a UX Professional: To ensure that your knowledge of usability and UX is up-to-date; and to show that you care about keeping your professional knowledge up-to-date
  • To have recognised proof of your knowledge of usability and UX
  • To give you the qualifications needed to advance to the higher certificates in the areas of user requirements engineering (CPUX-UR) and usability testing (CPUX-UT)

The only requirement for attending this course is a knowledge of modern interaction techniques, which you can obtain for example from surfing the web.

What will I learn on the course?

The course is based on content from the International Usability and User Experience Qualification Board (UXQB,

The course provides an introduction to usability and UX in the areas of:

  • The human-centred design process: Usability maturity, UX in agile projects
  • Usability concepts and guidelines: usability, user experience, accessibility
  • Understanding and specifying the context of use: procedures for analysis such as observation, interview, personas, scenarios, user groups
  • Specifying user requirements: how to write precise qualitative and quantitative user requirements
  • Describing user interaction: design, user journey maps, storyboards, low- and high-fidelity prototypes, dialogue principles, heuristics, guidelines, best practices in error messaging
  • Usability testing and other evaluation methods: step-by-step approach to running a usability test, inspection, heuristic evaluation, user surveys

The course includes about 10 practical exercises, including:

  • Prepare and conduct an interview
  • Sketch the context of use for an interactive system
  • Write qualitative and quantitative user requirements for an interactive system
  • Prepare and test a prototype of an interactive system
  • Observe a live usability test of a popular website

The exercises take up about 50% of the total time of the two-day course.

In addition to the exercises, the lectures are interspersed with typical examination questions to allow you to immediately check your understanding and to prepare you for the certification examination.

Course modules and prices

The course consists of three modules and extends over three days.

  • Module 1: UX Course: 2-day classroom course – $525
  • Module 2: Crash Course: Half-day intensive review of the entire curriculum and rehearsal certification examination – $275
  • Module 3: Certification examination – $145

Members of the New York City UXPA receive a $25 discount on each of the above prices - that is, you can save $75 by ordering all three modules.

You can take the certification at any time after the course at a Pearson Vue Center, for example if you want to digest the training over a couple of days before you do the certification examination. The certification examination price at a Pearson Vue Center may differ from the price above.

You can choose any combination of the modules. For example,

  • Choose all modules if you are new to UX
  • Choose module 2+3 if you are already familiar with UX
  • Choose module 3 if you want to prepare yourself completely on your own

Most people choose all three modules: 1+2+3.

If you want to prepare yourself completely on your own (only taking module 3), you will find the syllabus (curriculum) and a full set of examination questions for training purposes on

About the Trainer

The course is run by Rolf Molich, one of the pioneers of usability. He has worked in the field since1984 and together with Jakob Nielsen created the method of heuristic evaluation. Rolf has helped to develop the certification program and he is the editor of the CPUX-F curriculum. In 2013 he was named “Teacher of the year” by his students at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen for his usable approach to teaching. Rolf uses a highly interactive style for teaching and devotes about 50% of the course time to exercises.

What are UXQB and CPUX?

The International Usability and User Experience Qualification Board (UXQB) is a consortium of internationally recognised experts in usability and user experience. UXQB’s objective is to develop, maintain and manage the certification program CPUX – Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience.

CPUX is an international standard for qualification of people working professionally within UX. So far professional organizations in five European countries have recognized UXQB: Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England and Denmark. CPUX is based, in part, on ISO-standards and on the Usability Body of Knowledge, assembled by UXPA-I.

CPUX-F, Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience - Foundation Level is the basic UX certification. After obtaining the CPUX-F certificate, you can also be certified as user requirements engineer (CPUX-UR) or usability tester (CPUX-UT).

Read more about UX certification on Here you can also find curricula and examples of the examination questions that you have to answer if you want to be certified. The course includes many additional, unpublished examples of examination questions.

At this time, about 3,500 people have been CPUX-certified. The UXQB has about 30 independent CPUX-training providers. We are looking for training providers in the U.S.
