A panel discussion for the launch of Public Health: Past, Present and Future

Join us for a panel discussion looking at vaccination’s controversial history for the opening of the new public health nursing exhibition. Expert speakers include RCN Professional Lead for Public Health Helen Donovan, Dr Helen Bedford, registered nurse (UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health), Consultant community paediatrician Dr David Elliman, historian Professor Sally Shuttleworth (University of Oxford), and paediatric infectious disease consultant Professor Paul Heath (St George's Hospital). The panel will be followed by a drinks reception and the first chance to see the exhibition.

Panel Biographies

Dr David Elliman; Consultant in Community Child Health at Whittington Health NHS Trust with a special interest in screening and vaccination and has extensive research in vaccination and the effects of vaccine preventable disease. David will discuss the history of vaccination.

Professor Sally Shuttleworth; Professor of English Literature at St Ann’s college, Oxford University and has written widely on historical aspects of on public health and disease. Sally will introduce the session and give a brief talk about public health movements, which links to the exhibition, and briefly mention vaccination.

Dr Helen Bedford; Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Child Health with a a background as a nurse and health visitor with extensive research experience in attitudes to vaccination and the determinants of vaccine uptake as well as the effects of infectious disease. Helen will discuss current issues particularly public perceptions of vaccination.

Professor Paul Heath; paediatric infectious disease consultant at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with a specialist interest in immunology and vaccination extensive research experience in vaccine preventable disease. Paul will discuss future vaccine developments on the horizon.

Helen Donovan, RCN Professional lead for Public Health Nursing; Helen’s remit is to be the professional nursing voice for public health issues facing society, such as obesity and smoking advocating the public health role of all nursing staff. She also supports nursing staff in specialist areas of public health  across the UK. Helen has a background in Health Visiting and a special interest is in immunisation and health protection.
