Event Details

The Transport for London Van Smart driver training programme, endorsed by DVSA, aims to reduce work-related road risks and create long-term behaviour change in the van sector by bringing about professionalism amongst the drivers.

The vast majority of van drivers are hard-working, reliable and dedicated individuals who look after their vans and are proud of their driving skills and their ability to share the road effectively with other users. However, because they are busy people, it is all too easy for some of them to forget some of the risks they may pose to themselves and vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. In London, vans cover 80 per cent of all road freight mileage, 10 per cent of road traffic incidents involve a van and 11 per cent of these incidents result in serious injury or fatality.

The course consists of one 3.5hr theory module and one 3.5hr on-cycle practical module. The aim of the theory modules is to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to become safer, diligent, more efficient and professional drivers. The practical module provides instruction to professional drivers to improve their awareness of vulnerable road users (VRUs), using cycles on the public highway.

Course Objectives

  • To equip the drivers with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to plan and prepare themselves for driving
  • To equip the drivers with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to carry out their job diligently, safely, responsibly and with consideration for others
  • To help van drivers become safer, more efficient and professional

IMPORTANT: Any driver attending the Van Smart course is required to bring their full photocard driving licence with them.

IMPORTANT: If drivers wish to have their details uploaded to the DSA website so its counts towards 35 hours DCPC, then they need to ensure they bring £9.95 cash to cover the upload fee. You will need to notify the trainer on the day.
(£9.95 Upload fee is £8.75 ex.VAT plus £1 administration (which includes certificate) plus VAT).

In order for a driver to be uploaded to the FORS/TfL register and/or be accredited with the Driver CPC hours they must complete the entire course. Generally, the only reasons for not taking part in the cycle element are on medical grounds, or if during the cycle familiarisation session, the driver is risk assessed as not safe to ride a bike on public roads – in these instances it is acceptable for the drivers to walk the course meeting up with the cyclists at the exercise/discussion points and joining in with the discussion

All bookings are subject to our Cancellation Policy and by registering for a course you are agreeing to its terms. Click here to read the FORS Cancellation Policy.
