Led by Luisa-Maria Maccormack, this class will be a deep dive into the radiant world of Vanessa Bell and the Bloomsbury Group, with a particular focus on Bell’s luminous floral paintings and her groundbreaking approach to interior design. From painted walls to patterned textiles, Bell transformed Charleston House into a living artwork, designing every inch with bold colour, decorative detail, and a sense of freedom that still feels fresh today. We’ll explore her role at the heart of Bloomsbury, where art, craft, and domestic space intertwined to create one of the most influential creative circles of the twentieth century.
This session will be a unique opportunity to think about art not just on the canvas but throughout the home. Luisa will share her own journey of moving into a new space and designing it from scratch—showing how curtains, cushions, and even wallpaper can become canvases in themselves. Students will be introduced to simple but effective techniques for creating their own Bloomsbury-inspired patterns and furnishings.
The first part of the class will focus on drawing floral and interior motifs in the spirit of Vanessa Bell’s paintings, before moving into playful experiments with pattern design for fabrics and surfaces. By the end, students will have created their own Bloomsbury-inspired designs and gained fresh inspiration for bringing art into their everyday spaces.
