Event description
The Anlgo-Saxon West Midlands - Dr Della Hooke

About this event

The Anglo-Saxon period is the first for which we can reconstruct, in detail, the landscape of the West Midlands, largely through the medium of charters with boundary clauses and place-names. Dr Hooke’s lecture will present the kingdoms and folk regions of the West Midlands and the breakdown of ancient patterns of land use as early territories fragmented. New minster parochiae and, eventually, parishes were formed, and capital manors recognised. The new counties created in an effort to withstand Danish penetration established an entirely new set of administrative units and burhs. Charters and place-names enable us to understand patterns of settlement and land use and also provide an insight into the local landscapes as they were seen by their inhabitants.

Dr Della Hooke FSA was an Honorary Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Research in Arts and Social Science at the University of Birmingham and Editor of the Society for Landscape Studies History Journal.
