Event description
Major vegetation clearance for drainage installation

About this Event

This bridleway in Baughurst suffers badly during the winter months and becomes unusable for everyone hoping to access it. There is an old drainage system which can be located through the vegetation which, over the years has taken over. The drainage system is no longer working, so the bridleway becomes a giant bog!

For Mitch and Abi (our Rangers) to be able to reinstate the drainage channel, the vegetation needs to be cleared to allow access for the work.

This is going to be a big job - I will need all the help I can get!

The job: The work will be 100% vegetation clearance. The particularly bad part of the bridleway is from the Violet Lane entrance, however we will aim to give the whole bridleway some attention weather dependant. The land owner next to the path has kindly allowed us to stack the vegetation we are removing into her field so we can have a bonfire when appropriate.

Directions: Do not rely on the postcode (please take note of the following directions) - From Baughurst Road turn onto Violet Lane, the entrance to the bridleway is on the right just before a left hand track to some houses/farm. I will have the Countryside services vehicle parked at the entrance so that will be a clear marker. We have kindly been allowed to park in the stable yard of the neighbouring land owner (you will see a gate on the right just before you get to the bridleway entrance). Please park courteously to allow access for the landowner. Weather dependant you can also park on the grass verge, however in wet weather I wouldn't recommend this unless you have a 4x4!

What to bring:

- Your own work gloves

- Regretfully we cannot offer any refreshments at this time so please bring your own food/drink

- Any suitable veg clearance hand tools such as hand saws, loppers, slashers (I will bring plenty but you may want to bring your own)

- High viz would be recommended so we can be seen by other bridleway users

- Safety glasses due to the high density of bramble and hawthorn

Extra information:

- The meet time for the task will be 10:00 at the stated location. Finish time approx. 14:30

- There is no on site toilet

- Face masks are not mandatory however feel free to wear one if preferred

- One member of HCC staff will be present for this task - Gemma

- Gemma is a first aider

- Please wear sturdy footwear and bare in mind if the weather has been raining on the run up to the task it will be muddy

- If you fancy a treat after your hard work, there is a super pub just down the road called the Wellington Arms (obviously booking advisable)!

Finally please note: if you or a member of your household has been unwell within 14 days prior to the task with a continuous cough, high temperature, change to taste and/or smell, please do not attend the task and inform me if you are not coming.

There are plenty of dates up for grabs. Please attend as many as you would like, and as I said, the job is a big one and ongoing throughout the year, so any help would be massively appreciated!
