Event description

Description

This workshop is for first responders: medical professionals, law enforcement professionals, public safety officers, citizens regularly coming in contact with people who put self or others at risk.
It is short, practical, evidence-based and comprehensive.

Approximately 25% of adults live with mental illness. Many are known to emergency services and become entangled in criminal justice systems.

LEAP will provide a systematic approach when interacting with persons who have serious mental illness and especially those who are unaware they are ill (have anosognosia).

Aim: Learn evidence-based communication tools and tactics designed to accomplish de-escalating of challenging behaviour through the use of LEAP.

Objectives:

· De-escalate an angry, aggressive and/or paranoid person
· Establish trust quickly
· Transform noncompliant, oppositional and resistant persons into compliant, cooperative and trusting "partners"
· Access mental health services rather then criminal justice systems
