About this event

This short workshop will look at the work of the 17th century Dutch genre painter Jan Vermeer of Delft paying particular attention to his mode of perception and the ways in which this might inform a contemporary artist’s practice.

The day will centre on practical activities: the students will initially be making drawings, or small painted studies from images of Vermeer’s paintings. The lessons learned will be developed working from small still life set ups in the studio.

It is hoped the workshop will enable the sharpening of perceptual skills for drawing and painting and provide an opportunity to engage with the paintings at a more complex level.

About your tutor:  Paul Handley NEAC was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire in 1964, where he continues to live and work. He received my initial artistic training at the Norwich School of Art, where he studied for a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art Painting. He completed an Art Teachers Certificate at Goldsmiths College University of London and an MA in Art History at the Winchester School of Art and the OU. He has taught art and art history in a range of educational settings from schools and colleges to art schools and universities. He was initially elected a member of the NEAC in 1997.

Students should bring basic drawing materials including 2B pencils, hard rubber, putty rubber, blade/scalpel or other sharpener, scene painters charcoal, fixative, masking tape, good quality cartridge paper and or a sketchbook. Organiser The New English Art Club

Organiser of ‘Vermeer: Truth and Perception’ 1-day workshop with Paul Handley NEAC

Staffed entirely by members of the New English Art Club with a wealth of teaching experience, we offer a thorough and sound approach to drawing in its many forms, with small classes to ensure a personal and individual tutor/student relationship. Classes and workshops are at the heart of what the New English Art Club represents. We run courses at various venues, mainly in London, on drawing, sketching en plein air, and working from drawing to painting.

The New English Art Club is an elected society of contemporary painters whose ethos resides in art informed by the visual world and personal interpretation.

Our Annual Exhibition is a showcase not only for its members but also for aspiring artists: with a history going back more than a hundred years, it is an opportunity for work to be seen alongside some of the best artists painting today, held at Mall Galleries in London.
