Description

Please see some words below regarding COAST and our achievements and what we do. Please also find attached a couple of images. Let me know when you advertise, especially on social media as I can then share it on our platforms too. I will also create an online event on our online calendar too.

Please let me know if there is anything else,
Jenny

The Community of Arran Seabed Trust (COAST) is based in Lamlash Bay, on the Isle of Arran in West Scotland. We are a community-led charity. Our aim is to restore an abundant and healthy marine environment around the Isle of Arran and the wider Clyde region, and promote sustainable livelihoods.

Two local divers founded COAST in 1995 after witnessing the decline in fish stocks due to overfishing and the destruction of precious seabed habitats by trawling and dredging. Despite being a small organisation, COAST have achieved a great deal:

  • Established Scotland’s first No Take Zone (NTZ) in 2008 – the first ever community-led NTZ in the UK - providing a sanctuary for natural wildlife recovery.
  • Achieved the statutory designation of the South Arran Marine Protected Area (MPA) in 2016 – protecting seabed diversity and valuable fish nursery areas from damaging fishing techniques and allowing for the recovery of fish stocks.
  • Established a schools’ outreach programme to educate young people on local marine wildlife and conservation issues and delivering talks and events for the public.
  • Developed ongoing relationships with universities for research and monitoring of the NTZ and MPA, allowing us to see how wildlife and habitats are recovering.
  • Enabled the community to campaign against environmental threats such as pollution by fish farming activities.
  • Led the way in marine protection through working with key Scottish marine stakeholders and by inspiring coastal communities such as the Sound of Jura, Skye, and Wester Ross.

COAST is recognised throughout Scotland and internationally as a dynamic community group that leads the way on marine conservation and restoration, and as a hub for marine science in the Clyde. We have won various awards and have been described by George Monbiot as “pathfinders”, by the Scottish Government as “trailblazers” and by Professor Callum Roberts as “an absolute beacon in a rather dark sea”.
