Veteran Support Event delivered by the Veteran Support Partnership. Showcasing support opportunities available to Veterans.

About this event

The Veteran Support Partnership is a group of organisations joining together to help eliminate barriers to opportunities and enable the Armed Forces Community to reach their full potential. Our ambition is to deliver three virtual events throughout 2021, each with a focus on one of our strategic principles - Support, Develop, Employ.

This first event will focus on showcasing the support available to Veterans and their families.

Abby Smith and Dave Fletcher - Armed Forces Outreach Service

Abby Smith has been managing the award winning Armed Forces Outreach Service since 2012. Initially established in Gateshead, the service now works with local authority partners and operates across Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland and Durham to provide support and assistance to the Armed Forces Community with the transition into civilian life.

10:30am - Family Support

Tommy Watson - Director of Operations (North), Walking with the Wounded

A very passionate and highly experienced project and operations manager. Tommy has supported some of the most vulnerable and most experienced military personnel through their transition to civilian life.

10:50am - Mental Health

Syd Niven - Company Director, Northern Growth Academy

Syd has worked extensively as a coach and mentor with emerging and existing leaders. In recent years he’s been significantly involved with people struggling with stress, burnout, and trauma.

Mel Maughan - Wellbeing Manager, NHS Business Services Authority

Mel is responsible for leading internal programmes designed to improve colleague wellbeing, as well as social value initiatives through volunteering and charitable fundraising. At the event, Mel will be speaking about mental health in the workplace.

11:20am - Financial and Benefit Advice

Clive Davis - Welfare Rights Officer, Newcastle City Council

Having worked in welfare rights and advice for 35 years, Clive is passionate about enabling people to collect their correct benefit entitlement and avoiding the scourge of poverty.

Chris Carter - Division Manager, Newcastle Building Society

Chris left school to join the National coal board as an Apprentice Colliery engineer, pursuing this career for 13 years before deciding that a complete change of direction would be good. Chris has now been a Divisional Manager for four years. He and his team of 10 advisers give holistic financial advice to anyone who needs it.

11:50am - Fraud and Financial Crime

Sarah Blythe - Financial Crime Manager, Newcastle Building Society

Sarah has 10 years of experience within the Financial Crime Unit. Sarah manages the daily operations of the Financial Crime Unit and supports the prevention and detection of fraud and money laundering.
